Welcome to Year 2

Year Two – Charles Wicksteed Class Staff

Year Two – Steve Redgrave Class Staff

In Year 2, we aim to inspire every child's love of learning through our topic based curriculum and creative classrooms. Here are our curriculum questions for the year.

Autumn – ‘Why is our world wonderful?’ and ‘Would you like to live in Kenya?’

Spring – ‘Why did London Burn?’ and ‘How would you survive the cold?’

Summer – ‘How do maps help us?’ and ‘What makes a good explorer?’

Reading

At St Andrew’s, we love reading. The children will be surrounded by literature in the classrooms and we will read a variety of texts to them throughout the year.  Reading is an essential part of learning so we hope that children read at home as much as possible. Please keep a log of your child’s reading in the provided reading diary and return this to school daily. The children will take a new reading book home each week.

Homework

Reading: We want the children to read for pleasure and we encourage them to read every day. If your child is reading other literature at home, please log this in the reading diary too, as we would love to discuss it with them.

Maths: The children will receive maths homework. This will be based on number bonds, learning 2, 10 and 5 times tables and using methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

PE

P.E. for both Year 2 classes will be on a Monday and a Thursday afternoon. Please send your child to school in their PE kit on this day. Your child will need black or navy shorts, leggings or joggers, a plain white t-shirt, plimsoles or trainers and a jumper or hoody during colder weather. Earrings will need to be removed on these days.

Assessment

Year 2 children will have ongoing assessments in reading, writing and maths throughout the year and we will happily discuss your child’s progress with you. If we feel at any time that that a child is at risk of not reaching their targets, we will support them by carrying out interventions in school and can discuss with you, ways in which you can help at home.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to us. We are available every day after school or you can email us.
