Welcome to Year 1

Year One - David Attenborough Class Staff

Year One - Florence Nightingale Class Staff

In Year 1, we aim to inspire every child's love of learning through our topic based curriculum and creative classrooms. Our topics this year will be as follows:

Autumn – ‘Long, long ago...’

Spring – ‘Paddington meets the Queen’

Summer – ‘Rumble in the jungle’

Continuous Provision

This year will be our fourth year of having continuous provision in Year 1, which involves the children learning through play. Research shows that play is not just fun, it is also the best way for children to learn. By playing children can independently practice all the skills they will need to grow up.

Our continuous provision is carefully planned to ensure that the children have access to a variety of activities and that they can practise a range of skills. The areas include: construction, small world, block play, role play, creative, Science investigation, Maths and English. We will also have daily outdoor learning opportunities in our Early Years/Year 1 outdoor classroom. So please ensure they have a coat everyday as we will be outdoors in all weather!

Reading

At St Andrew’s, we love reading. The children will be surrounded by literature in the classrooms and we will read a variety of texts to them throughout the year. Reading is an essential part of learning so we hope that children read at home as much as possible. Please keep a log of your child’s reading in the provided reading diary and return this to school daily. The children will take a new reading book home each week and will have the opportunity to take home a sharing book at the weekend.

Homework

Reading: We want the children to read for pleasure and we encourage them to read every day. If your child is reading other literature at home, please log this in the reading diary too, as we would love to discuss it with them.

Maths: We will send maths homework weekly; this will be related to the learning that we have taught in the previous week. This will help consolidate the children’s learning and enable them to practise the key maths skills.

PE

P.E. for both Year 1 classes will be on a Thursday and Friday. Please send your child to school in their PE kit on both of those days. Your child will need black or navy shorts, leggings or joggers, a plain white t-shirt, plimsoles or trainers and a jumper or hoody during colder weather.

Assessment

Year 1 children will have ongoing assessments in reading, writing and maths throughout the year and we will happily discuss your child’s progress with you. If we feel at any time that that a child is at risk of not reaching their targets, we will support them by carrying out interventions in school and can discuss with you, ways in which you can help at home.

All of the children in Year 1 are required to undertake the Phonics Screening Check in the Summer term. As a school, we are required to submit the results of these assessments to the Department of Education.

Any child with an EHCP may be exempt from the tests or may have special measures put in place.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to us. We are available every day after school.
